Featured Friends of Shelters: A Shelter Friend
A Shelter Friend is made up of volunteers giving pets a second chance on life. A Shelter Friend, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization working with county animal shelters of southeastern North Carolina, rescue groups and like-minded individuals, to facilitate adoptions and provide support for rescue efforts.
A Shelter Friend acts as a liaison between the shelter and rescue groups nationwide, coordinating rescue efforts and assisting with the logistics, including veterinary care and transportation. In 2008 over 1,000 dogs and cats, puppies and kittens were moved to safety; in 2009 that number reached nearly 1,400 and in 2010 over 1,100 lives were saved.
A Shelter Friend has established a low-income spay and neuter program within Bladen County, because this is the only way to decrease the intake and subsequent euthanasia of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens at the Bladen County Animal Shelter.
